Civil Rights by J.H.

In Gandhi’s words, “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.” In this sentence, Gandhi is saying that using violence will give them a temporary advantage in their protests, but it will only end up damaging the results of their protests. Gandhi believed that non-violence was their best option to earn publicity in their protests.

Martin Luther King Jr. was inspired to do peaceful protests by Gandhi. Although, unlike Gandhi, Dr. King described peaceful protests in a speech. “I have a dream, that one day, my children will live a nation where they are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”  What MLK means is that he wants his children to have people around them who will treat them like regular people. Not depending on race, but character.

This is why Dr. King and Gandhi were willing to go to jail. They knew that they were still helping their country. Even though they weren’t able to participate in the protests, MLK and Gandhi knew they could still influence the choices of their followers.

MLK was doing peaceful protests against segregation. Segregation is the separation of different races. In the South, whites believed they had all of the power. They didn’t think of blacks as people whites just thought of them as helpers. Freedom Riders tried to change segregation by riding buses through all of the states of the “Deep South”. They  were protesting against interstate bus segregation because they knew, along with many others, that they needed to integrate the bus areas.

Freedom Riders had to be trained to protest because they had already known that whites were going to push them around and mess with them in rude ways to make them quit. Although they were trained well, Martin Luther King was already aware of what was coming for them. Although they made the promise not to stop the protest no matter what. They didn’t even listen to MLK.

In Anniston, AL, the Greyhound bus tires were attacked by an angry mob of white people trying to stop them.  Nothing happened to the Freedom Riders until they got just outside Anniston, AL, when the bus stopped because their deflated tires. As they stopped, followers from Anniston surrounded the bus and lit a fire on the bus to stop the Freedom Riders permanently. This caused the Freedom Riders to get trapped onto a burning bus. Luckily, the Freedom Riders were able to escape, due to the fire bomb reaching the gas tank and clearing an exit. Unfortunately, in Birmingham, the other Freedom Riders didn’t know the Greyhound bus got attacked and ran into their own problems. What they didn’t know was that people were waiting for them in Birmingham. Those people were given 15 minutes to attack the Freedom Riders by order of the local police. The Freedom Riders experienced violence but they gained publicity and the attention of the President of the United States.

Shortly before the Freedom Rides, came Greensboro 4. Greensboro 4 was meant to integrate certain spots in the city (lunch counters, restrooms, water fountains, etc). Four men got enough publicity to inspire protests in 40 other cities. This was enough to humiliate the businesses and the government to change the laws. That humiliation made the movement all the more successful. The Greensboro 4 was trying to desegregate a lunch counter. A lunch counter is a place, somewhat like a small diner. People sit on stools down a long table and are served lunch. This protest caused Woolworth (a store/restaurant) to lose 1,000’s of dollars and also caused them to change because of humiliation. Greensboro 4 ended up inspiring 40 cities to change the ways of segregation.

Gandhi inspired Dr. King, Freedom Riders, and the Greensboro 4 because his protests were non-violent and successful. These turnouts made thousands believe that the same positive results can work anywhere. Non-violent ways can prove successful in changing laws by never giving up. You aren’t hurting them, but you keep trying until you succeed. At one point, someone has to give in. If you aren’t hurting anyone, they have no reason to forbid you from doing something.

Civil Rights by D.P.

(work in progress)

1. “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”   Gandhi’s quote means that if you use violence, it may do some good, but it will not last long. The horrible thing you do to them, things, etc, will be remembered forever, and will hurt forever.

2. How does Dr. King explain peaceful protests?   Dr. King explains peaceful protests as peaceful ways to put up a protest to show that they want rights to vote, and to have the same rights as the white people. King knew that using violence would bring violence back at them, so he used peaceful protests to try and get equal rights for all black people.

3. Why do you think that Gandhi and Martin Luther King are willing to go to jail?  I think Gandhi and Martin are willing to go to jail because they know more people will learn about this, get more publicity, and hopefully get more people involved to stop the unfair law and to help people see how silly the law is being and join the protest. “We will not hate you, but we will not follow your evil laws.”-Martin Luther King

4. What is segregation?    Segregation means that the different races are separated from each other. In the southern states, the white were separated by the color of skin, like colored and white. The colored would usually get the poor quality things, and may not have some things the white have. For example, in Roll of Thunder, the white kids at Jefferson School have a bus ride to school, and run the walking black kids off the road.

5. What do the Freedom Riders have to do with segregation?    The freedom Riders were involved with stopping segregation in the “Deep South”. They would ride through the segregation states and would protest for them to stop. When they were in Alabama however, they got a surprise.

6. What are the Freedom Riders trying to do?     The Freedom Riders are riding by bus to the southern states that have segregation because they are against it. They want the “Deep South” states to end segregation, so they are riding over so say, “Hey, we think segregation is mean. Stop this now please. We will protest until you say yes.”

7. Why did the Freedom Riders have to be trained before going on the trip?   The Freedom Riders had to be trained in nonviolence so if the white hurt the Freedom Riders, the Freedom Riders wouldn’t react violently and go to jail.

8. What did Dr. King tell the Freedom Riders when they got to Atlanta?   Dr. King told the Freedom riders that his sources told him there was a surprise that was waiting for them in Anniston, Alabama, and that the Freedom Riders should stop doing the freedom rides, because some one would get hurt.

9. What happened in Anniston, Alabama?   In Anniston Alabama, the Freedom Rider’s bus was attacked at the refueling station, and the bus’s tires were slashed,

the windows shattered, and an angry mob shouting some really nasty names.

Protests and Civil Rights

By W.E.

Gandhi once said that an “eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.” It means that hurting someone does well for a little bit but it can come right back at you. Or that someone will get mad and will make or just come after you and try to harm you.

King says that the only way to solve this problem is by using non-violence and it gets more attention any way. He made peaceful protests by his famous speech on Washington he said, “I have a dream. That one day my children will not be judged on their skin color but by their personality.

I think Dr. King and Gandhi were willing to go to jail because they wanted to fill up the jails because the people would find out about unjust laws and join the protest. They were both dedicated to getting publicity so they could get laws changed. For example, Dr. King was arrested many times and it got the attention of the President.

Also this is another way for them to get so many people from newspapers because they are in jail and that there were so many of them.

Double

Segregation is when blacks and whites were separated because white people thought that black people were not as good as them and they made them second class citizens, white people barley thought that they were human.

The freedom riders were a group of people who have been trained to resist violence at all costs. They road buses through the “Deep South” to try and get people to follow the desegregation law.

The freedom riders tried to get people to stop treating black people like second class citizens. The freedom riders had to be trained so that when or if the people torture them so if they really do get tortured they will RESIST DA TEMPATSION.

MLK told the freedom rider that when they arrive at Alabama they would get a “surprise.” He said that it would be bad in Anniston, Alabama and that they should stay out because it could cause even more trouble that there already was.

In Anniston, Alabama they arrived at the bus stop with a HUGE angry crowd. When they got on the next bus the crowd slashed the tires. They didn’t realize that they were slashed until they were just out of town. Then the Freedom rider saw that there were people in cars following them. Those people then got out of their cars and headed towards the bus and somewhere in the crowd they threw a bomb at the bus and exploded an exit for the Freedom Riders. Amazingly they all survived.

In Birmingham, Alabama the police chief said that they had 15 minutes to do whatever they wanted to do to the Freedom Riders without being arrested. So they did, they beat them the punched them, they even almost killed a few.

The desegregation law made it uncomfortable for the white people who owned a restraint and they still didn’t serve some. When the Greensboro 4 went and sat at a restraint front that was for white people only. And because they were uncomfortable they didn’t serve them because they were black.

A lunch counter is a place where you can eat and at steak “n” shake you can even see them cook. This is where lots of black people got arrested for trying to get something to eat.  These protests effect Woolworth because their customers didn’t go there anymore because there were bunches and bunches of protests going on and they didn’t want to be stuck in the middle of one.Because of these 4 men there were 40 protests. All because of those 4 men. They inspired businesses and companies to start protesting.

Gandhi inspired MLK, The Freedom Riders, and the Greensboro 4 because he used nonviolence and not only that but it worked!!! He used nonviolence to get publicity, it worked. He used nonviolence to boycott, it worked. I guess my point is whatever he did, it worked.

Many famous heroes like MLK and Gandhi all used nonviolence. They got lots of publicity by using nonviolence. Gandhi helped get India away from Great Britton, while MLK got black and white people alike together. No matter if they are trying to separate or bring together they all used nonviolence to fix their problems.

Protests and Civil Right

By L.C.

GANDHI says that hurting someone will be    good for a little while but bad forever; this is an example of peaceful protesting.

DR. King and Gandhi are willing to go to jail because they will get publicity, the news that they are in jail will go into the news paper.

Gandhi used peaceful protestingto get freedom in India, the British were over taxing salt. So he went with about 10000 men, to go to the sea and get their own salt. Dr. King got peaceful protesting from Gandhi because it worked more then fighting, because if you fight the enemy they fight back. Dr king explains peaceful protesting in the speech, I had a dream.

Segregation is when white people dislike black people, and basically the white people think the blacks are not like them.

The freedom riders had to practice peace-

Full protesting, because they would make more publicity if they were not going to fight, and they kind of wanted to put in jail, that would make publicity.

The freedom riders went on two buses, the Greyhound and the Trailways. The Greyhound bus got its tires slashed and bombed by the Clue Clucks clan.

The freedom riders ha to train in non- violence, because there would not be as good affect on the USA. Although the freedom riders were doing it for a good purpose MLK new it would turn out bad and when he was asked to join the freedom riders he said no. But he said they were aiming for a good goal but to stop. The freedom riders did not stop they kept on going, MLK new what would happen more then the freedom riders.

The Greensboro 4 were some men from a college and they sat in white only lunch counter. Later more kids from the school came to the restaurant and sat at the counter, although they were paying customers but they were not allowed to eat at the counter. This freedom act did not help Woolworth; people would not go there because there was fighting. Over time Woolworths had to stop working because no people were coming.

Later the store next to Woolworths also went out of order.  After a long time Woolworths let blacks sit at the counter.

Gandhi inspired Dr. King with peaceful protesting and King used it because it worked, Gandhi used it when the British were taxing salt, King used it to fight segregation.

Explain this quote from Gandhi “I object to violence because when it appears to do good it is only temporary the evil it does is permanent.” The good that you do is only temporary and the evil that comes with it is permanent.

How does Dr. King explain peaceful protests? He wants us to fight with kindness and be peacefulness and don’t stoop to their level. And “eye for an eye” means that if you keep on using violence, they will keep fighting with you till the end. Using peaceful actions and non-violence and violence will never work because they will keep on fighting back until to the end, this goes with the “eye for an eye” quote.

Why do you think Martin Luther king and Gandhi willing to go to jail?  Martin Luther King and Ghandi were both willing to go to jail because they wanted their followers will know its okay to go to jail, as long as your doing the right thing, so they will do peaceful protests even though they might get arrested, they also went to jail to receive publicity, which is another example of Ghandis quote “fill the jails.”

What does freedom riders have to do with segregation? Freedom Riders were trying to end segregation with there “peaceful” ways. There was lots of violence included with freedom rides. They all rode in different buses, and went into the Deep South and saw how they would treat them.

What is segregation? Segregation the separation of blacks and whites. They couldn’t drink out of the same water fountain, go to the same school and even eat at the same restaurant. Whites thought they were soupier to blacks. Whites usually got the better stuff, in Roll Of thunder the students got poor quality books, and whites got the good- condition boo. Even after when black people got their rights Women didn’t for a while.

What did the freedom riders try to do? They did the opposite of bus boycotts they went to places in the south and see how they acted towards them. And road buses but most got blown up.

Why did the freedom riders have to be trained before going on the trip? They had to be trained before going on the trip because they had to remain calm. They have to remain calm because a lot of danger and scary stuff is going to happen to them. They had to know what to do when that happened.

What did Dr. King tell the freedom riders when they got to Atlanta?  Martin said that they should stop because it’s a dangerous trip. He said this because it’s a dangerous mission for the freedom riders to experience. Martin was trying to warn them, but they didn’t listen.

What happened in Aniston, Alabama?  The freedom riders were going on a trip and when they got to Aniston there was an angry mob of people waiting for them. They slashed their tires, blocked the exits and blew the bus up, but no one died.

What happened in Birmingham, Alabama? Another freedom riders bus and the bus were surrounded and the tires were slashed and the bus was blown up. This disaster was a lot like The Aniston, Alabama.

What did segregation have to do with the Greenspo 4? There was a lunch counter in Woolworths (a former segregated lunch counter) and they sat down at the counter and started a protest. They had food thrown at them and they called them racial names. The police showed up while the protests were going on. People didn’t want to go there.

What is a lunch counter? A lunch counter is a counter where you can chat with friends and eat good food. Blacks were allowed in the store, but not the lunch counter. That’s where Greensboro 4 started their protest. The lunch lady warned them that they are going to get in trouble if they don’t leave the whites-only lunch counters.

How did this protest affect Woolworths?  This affected Wool Worths because all of the commotion (protests). This also affects the stores around Woolworths. Some of these places had to close down their stores.

How many other protest these men inspire. They inspired Rosa parks bus boycotts and freedom riders.

How did Gandhi influence Dr.King? With the peaceful protest and in the end they won the protest against the British. This gave him confidence that he can do this! Because Ghandi was able to win the fight, while using non-violence and peaceful actions.

BASEBALL ANSWER FOR CIVIL RIGHTS

By: PJ

“An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.” This is one of Gandhi’s quotes; he was trying to say if you use violence it will only cause more violence. Gandhi influenced many peacemakers like Martian Luther King Jr. Gandhi was trying to humiliate the Europeans. One of his acts was the salt march where he walked 240 miles to get to the ocean with many followers. They were protesting against the tax on salt.

Martin was inspired by Gandhi was up against segregation along with other groups like the Greensboro four and the freedom riders they all tried to stop segregation. Martian had a famous speech called “I have a dream”.

Gandhi and Dr. King both were willing to go to jail because they wanted to fill the jails and it costs money to put someone in jail.

The freedom riders, the freedom riders rode busses through the south trail ways and the greyhound. They both went through Anniston and only 1 came out. Then in Birmingham the police came and said 15 minutes where no one was arrested 15 minutes of destruction. The riders had to use special training because they didn’t want anyone to hit back and get bad publicity. http://gestraining.wix.com/main#!civil-rights-

The Greensboro 4 desegregated the lunch counters at the Woolworths store; they kept the receipt to the store to show they were paying customers. Then the sat at the white only lunch counter then the store closed early so the drama would stop. The next day they did it again after that blacks all over started doing this, then shops around the Woolworths started closing. About a month or so later, they finally integrated the lunch counter.

If you aren’t killing anyone you have no reason to be arrested.

“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary while the evil is permanent.” Gandhi made a famous speech and I think it means that if you use violence what would it give to you? It wouldn’t give you anything it would just give you either somebody that’s dead or an injury and nobody wants that. That’s why Gandhi said “An EYE for an EYE only ends with the blind” –Matahama Gandhi MLK explains peaceful protests by not hurting anybody because he thinks protesting with violence is a Bad thing and it shouldn’t be used with protesting.

Dr. King explains peaceful protests in a speech. “I have a dream that my kids will live in a nation where they aren’t judged by the color of their skin but content of their character.”-Martin Luther King Jr. This means that they will have people around them that will not make fun of them and be their friends! By creating this speech, it worked and inspired millions of people to not be racist.

Martin Luther King and Gandhi were willing to go to jail because they knew that were still helping the movement by doing it non-verbally. Jail helped Martin and Gandhi in the movement because it showed people how it was unfair that they were getting arrested for marching because it wasn’t illegal. Getting arrested for marching gained more people and publicity which can humiliate the government.

Segregation is when different races get separated. Like in Roll of Thunder at the market the Logan’s had to park in the back because the front was full of whites. Segregation also involved in the Freedom Rides. The riders were trying to desegregate the buses. Blacks had to sit in the back of the bus, not the front. When the Freedom Riders where in Anniston, AL a mob of white people came outside and started slashing there tires because they didn’t like that the Freedom Riders were trying to get freedom from whites. Since the Riders suspected that violence would be a part of their ride, they had to train.

The Freedom Riders needed to be trained to use non-violence because if they came across a mob they would know what to do. They didn’t want to be aggressive because that would ruin their movement and it wouldn’t work.

Martin Luther King Jr. told the Freedom Riders that they shouldn’t continue in the rest of Alabama. He had already known about the people in Anniston and he tried to warn the Freedom Riders. Even though, the Freedom Riders didn’t listen. They still went on.

As they were moving along to Anniston, a giant mob of whites, dressed in church clothes came outside and started to attack the Freedom Riders bus by slashing their tires. The whites weren’t happy with them because they didn’t want them to have freedom. Although, it got way worse just outside of Anniston.

Just outside of Anniston whites threw bombs at the buses which caused a bunch of people to get trapped. The fire reached the gas tank, it blew up and cleared a way for people to get out. The people in Birmingham, wasn’t aware of what had happened to the greyhound bus and continued on their way.

In Birmingham, the Freedom Riders got stopped and got attacked. It lasted at least 15 minutes. The cops came late to the seen. When they arrived, they yelled, “Your fun is over, time to go home.” If the attackers kept on going after 15 minutes they would’ve gotten arrested because the limited time would be over. This connects to Roll of Thunder because the Wallace’s would get evicted if they hung TJ on Mr. Granger’s land.

Greensboro 4 were trying to desegregate the lunch counter. They tried to desegregate it because only white people can sit at the counter and blacks wouldn’t get served. A lunch counter is a place where you can get your food. It is basically a small diner. The protests of this lunch counter, caused Woolworth to lose most of their money because not that many people where going there anymore. Woolworths stayed open but their business went down.              The Greensboro 4 inspired 40 cities to protest unfair government issues.

Gandhi once said “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary, the evil it does is permanent.” This means that if someone gets killed by someone else it might protect someone, but somewhere there is a person that loved the dead one so they get angry. In the end everybody is mad. As Gandhi also once said, “an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.”

Now Gandhi is not the only one who disliked violence, though he was an inspiration for so many others, for example Martin Luther King Jr. or MLK Jr. He explains peaceful protests as the only way to win, for if you use violence, everybody loses. To win influence you need a lot of people, and if people don’t know you exist, you can’t get followers, and you can’t make change. And if you can’t make change, YOU FAILED!!!!!!!! So don’t fail, ok? If you are like Gandhi or King then you are very dedicated to whatever you do, but you still won’t hurt anyone, life is like a chess game; you always have to think multiple moves ahead to execute your (hopefully) intricate plan. But you must also think about your opponents moves and the consequences of your  actions, with all of this you still must sacrifice your pieces, but remember, though the queen is most capable piece, it doesn’t mean that it is the best, for sometimes, the lowliest pawn can call a game. There were many checks and sacrifices for both sides, but one pawn can set everything in motion. “We will not hate you, but we will not follow your evil laws!”-Martin Luther King

DOUBLE

Segregation was a nuisance for many people and they found that they couldn’t talk about what they wanted. One of the people that fought against segregation was Rosa Parks, the first black woman to ride a bus with whites. Yeah, well she was not really the first one to do that, there was Ida B. Wells and many others before her, like tiny rain drops in a rain gauge, hers just made the 1 inch line.

The thing is that it costs money to keep people in jail and if you fill up the jails they have to send you to another jail and then that jail will fill up and they pay a lot of money and all the while more and more people are going to jail and those jails will pay money. Eventually all the jails are full and they have to let you go and you keep protesting and they can’t send you to jail, HUUUUUUUUUHHH! And you win.

However if you can’t get any publicity then can’t get followers then you can’t   make the jails pay money to keep people in jail and you can’t fill up the jails and they won’t have to send you to another jail and then that jail won’t fill up and they won’t pay a lot of money and all the while you are stuck in jail and those jails won’t pay money. Eventually all the jails are empty except for you and they don’t have to let you go and you can’t keep protesting and they can send you to jail whenever you get out because the jails are empty and, HUUUUUUH! Yeah, you get it.

TRIPLE

The bus was not the only place that there was segregation, black and white people couldn’t use the same bathroom, water fountain, stores, and lunch counters. The last one is the one that we are talking about. The Greensboro 4 were 4 AT&T students of color that went to a local store called Woolworths. There they sat at all white segregated lunch counter. They asked for food and paid for it to, but were not served. They were very angry so they sat there until the store closed early. They swore to come back the next day, and they did. They did the same for a month until Woolworths unsegregated their lunch counter. By doing this they inspired sit ins at segregated lunch counters all over the country.

THE END DA DA DA
